![]() Spending just a few minutes consciously breathing sends signals of balance to our brain, telling us that we are ok, and brings us out from the part of our brain that makes us feel overwhelmed, into a state of calm. However, in our fast-paced, information-heavy world, we often lean towards acceleration. We alternate between these two every second of the day, with each breath we take. The parasympathetic is our braking system, which slows us down. The sympathetic branch is our accelerator and speeds us up. By breathing at resonance, we enter into an even balance between the two branches of our autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic (which moves us towards activity) and the parasympathetic, which moves us towards rest. How is it possible for one breathing technique to do so much? The answer lies within our nervous system. There have been hundreds of scientific studies performed on resonant breathing, which show a wide array of benefits, including reduction of inflammation, reduction of stress, improved sleep, improved resiliency, and strengthening of cardiovascular function. The effects of resonance support the innate ability of our body, nervous system, and emotions to restore themselves through the balancing of the complementary branches of our autonomic nervous system, which control our heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, respiration, and many other automatic functions of the body. It results in a calm, restful alertness, and many other benefits. It occurs spontaneously when we breathe at a rate of five to seven breaths per minute (instead of our usual 15-18). Is inspired by the resonance, the scientific name that describes what happens when our heart rate, heart rate variability, blood pressure, and brainwave function come into a coherent frequency. and after just a few minutes see if you feel a little bit calm, just let that soak into you. Bridget Bentz, Molly Seavy-Nesper and Deborah Franklin adapted it for the Web.Resonant breathing is like a stress reset button. Sam Briger and Joel Wolfram produced and edited this interview for broadcast. They trained themselves to breathe in ways to profoundly affect their physical bodies. So some of these divers have a lung capacity of 14 liters, which is about double the size for a adult male. But we can absolutely affect our lung capacity. We've been told that whatever we have, whatever we're born with, is what we're going to have for the rest of our lives, especially as far as the organs are concerned. You watch this person at the surface take a single breath there and completely disappear into the ocean, come back five or six minutes later. When I first saw this, this was several years ago, I was sent out on a reporting assignment to write about a free-diving competition. Most divers will hold their breath for eight minutes, seven minutes, which is still incredible to me. On how free divers expand their lung capacity to hold their breath for several minutes So, by just extending those inhales and exhales, by moving that diaphragm up and down a little more, you can have a profound effect on your blood pressure, on your mental state. You want to make it very easy for your body to get air, especially if this is an act that we're doing 25,000 times a day. Or you can take a few very fluid and long strokes and get there so much more efficiently. It's going to take a while, but you'll get there. You can think about breathing as being in a boat, right? So you can take a bunch of very short, stilted strokes and you're going to get to where you want to go. On the problem with taking shallow breaths As we exhale, that blood shoots back out through the body. The diaphragm lowers when we take a breath in, and that sucks a bunch of blood - a huge profusion of blood - into the thoracic cavity. And something else happens when we take a very deep breath like this. As you exhale, you should be feeling your heart slow down. If you take a very slow inhale in, you're going to feel your heart speed up. Right now, you can put your hand over your heart. So the diaphragm lowers, you're allowing more air into your lungs and your body immediately switches to a relaxed state.īecause the exhale is a parasympathetic response. ![]() But by breathing slowly, that is associated with a relaxation response. Because if you think about it, if you're stressed out a tiger is going to come get you, you're going to get hit by a car, breathe, breathe, breathe as much as you can. And the way to change that is to breathe deeply. So you're stimulating that sympathetic side of the nervous system. So what happens when you breathe that much is you're constantly putting yourself into a state of stress. and he explained to me that people with anxieties or other fear-based conditions typically will breathe way too much. ![]() It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shares a heavily revised platform with the Camry. Two genera of geese are only tentatively placed in the Anserinae they may belong to the shelducks or form a subfamily on their own: Cereopsis, the Cape Barren goose, and Cnemiornis, the prehistoric New Zealand goose. The two living genera of true geese are: Anser, grey geese and white geese, such as the greylag goose and snow goose, and Branta, black geese, such as the Canada goose. In Germanic languages, the root gave Old English gōs with the plural gēs and gandra (becoming Modern English goose, geese, gander, respectively), West Frisian goes, gies and guoske, Dutch: gans, New High German Gans, Gänse, and Ganter, and Old Norse gās and gæslingr, whence English gosling. The word "goose" is a direct descendant of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns. The collective noun for a group of geese on the ground is a gaggle when in flight, they are called a skein, a team, or a wedge when flying close together, they are called a plump. Young birds before fledging are called goslings. The term "goose" may refer to either a male or female bird, but when paired with " gander", refers specifically to a female one (the latter referring to a male). More distantly related members of the family Anatidae are swans, most of which are larger than true geese, and ducks, which are smaller. Some other birds, mostly related to the shelducks, have "goose" as part of their names. This group comprises the genera Anser (the grey geese and white geese) and Branta (the black geese). The Domain Access suite of modules provide functionality that allows serving multiple sites (domains) from this setup, and specifying which pieces of content belong to a particular site, or are shared across some or all of the sites. ![]() This architecture consists of a single codebase and single database/installation. sites that need lots of special customization to code or config, can rapidly increase the risk of technical debt in an architecture that was meant to maintain similar sites. As a note, this setup is not supported by Pantheon, because they don’t allow multiple databases per hosting plan.Ī shared codebase setup would be most beneficial if all of the sites are using similar modules and settings.A code error has the potential to affect all of the sites. This is mitigated if most of the content is static (for anonymous users), because it can be cached by a CDN which can deliver the (cached) pages even if the server is down. Since there is a single server hosting all of the sites, a traffic spike can affect all of the other sites.Scripts are a frequent solution that comes up to automate maintenance tasks across the sites, which means more devops time.Deployments in this architecture need to happen “all at once” for all the sites, which can potentially be chaotic (there is no simple “revert” a commit for a single site, for example).Configuration and updates still need to be run once per site and saved back into code configuration (in each site’s config folder). This implies a high level of trust in the whole team, and does not allow for separation of concerns, meaning that while team members could be assigned to work only in a particular site, the codebase architecture implies it cannot be enforced on a code level. ![]() All developers working in the team have access to the codebase that affects all of the sites. This is one of the greatest risks of a multisite setup, because if sites start diverging in functionality, it makes no sense to keep maintaining a single codebase. If a site decides to customize functionality provided by a Features module, then it would lose any further updates to the module, as they have deviated from it.Less hosting costs: a single hosting plan that supports all of the traffic from all of the sites might be cheaper than hosting per individual site.Another option would be to use the Config Split module to segment what configuration is shared across sites and what should be overridden per site. Shared features can be accomplished by using Feature modules: features modules can be shared across the sites, and then individual sites can import the configuration from it.Some degree of customization is possible, because each site has its own configuration, and it can have it’s own custom theme and modules.Code and library updates only need to be done once.Onboarding developers and administrative tasks are easier with a single codebase. Each website can also have some extra modules / themes under its own subdirectory in the same codebase. In a classic Drupal multisite architecture, the individual websites share code (the Drupal core, modules, and themes), but each website has its own database so they do not share content, configuration, or settings. ![]() We’ll be looking at four distinct implementation choices: Classic Drupal Multisite, Domain Access or Mega Site, Distribution Profile, and an offshoot of the distribution profile called Custom Upstream. In Drupal we have several ways to accomplish this, and this post will describe some architecture options that make this possible, as well as the relevant factors that can help you decide which option provides the best ‘fit’ for the implementation. Oftentimes projects need a way to serve multiple domains from the same installation or from the same codebase. Social work in mental health: an evidence-based approach. This will depend on what items the child is ingesting. Some other kids seem simply to like the sensation of different objects and textures in their mouth. There’s also been a suggestion in some studies that pica might be a compulsion for some children, like those seen in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Some children with pica are found to be iron and/or zinc deficient. Researchers haven’t found the answer to this yet and, as is often the case, it’s likely that pica happens in different children for different reasons. It also seems to be much more often seen among children with an intellectual disability or an autistic spectrum disorder. It seems to be most common amongst 2-3 year olds with the incidence reducing as they get older. That said, figures of between 10-30% of young children have been quoted. This therefore excludes some cultural practices such as the eating of clay or soil in various parts of the world.īecause of the inconsistencies in the definition and due to the general under-reporting of these things, it’s difficult to know how prevalent pica is among children. ![]() The word ‘pica’ is defined differently depending on where you look but the DSM-IV (the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) calls for “persistent eating of non-nutritive substances for at least 1 month that’s developmentally inappropriate and not culturally sanctioned and severe enough to warrant clinical attention”. It seems to depend largely on how mobile the child is as to what they can access. These non-foods can include dirt, clothing, paper, toothpaste, hair, glass, paint, string, stones…the list goes on. ![]() Very young children, under the age of 18 months, will put a range of things (other than food) in their mouths but repeatedly eating items which are considered ‘non-nutritive’ (ie not food) after that age is generally considered abnormal.
